While there are many pieces of software designed to protect a computer from viruses and even more information available on protecting a computer system from these malicious attacks, many computer users don’t take the time to realize that, in addition to viruses, there are other types of software that once downloaded can negatively affect the computers ability to function properly. Taking the time to understand these three types of malicious software can help a computer user more effectively protect themselves against them.
First, considered the phenomenon known as adware. It was originally designed to aid marketers in their attempts to market products to computer users. In most cases, adware is relatively harmless. The user may notice an additional toolbar or a small advertisement in places that previously had none. The truth is, even a small program eats up system resources and can lead to slow running times and even system failure.
Second, spyware of was invented to assist other users in their efforts to gather information on Internet users across the globe. For example, a company may develop a piece of spyware designed to track certain pieces of relevant information regarding clients or potential clients. This information is then packed and sent to the original owner of the program. Again, this may seem harmless but spy ware eats away at power and resources and can cause massive problems to any system.
Finally, malware exist. This software is far more malicious in nature. It is always designed to create a harmful or dangerous environment in an operating system. In this, they are similar to viruses or Trojan horses. Malware programs do require an additional security measure other than anti-virus software to completely protect the user.
Taking the time to familiarize yourself with the various types of malicious programs currently circulating on the Internet is the best way to keep yourself safe and protected. Failing to do so is failing to protect your system.
