Pros and Cons of Netbook Computers

Netbook computers seemed to be the answer for light weight, portable technology. They are definitely convenient, space efficient and light, but they also have some drawbacks.

Let’s start with the pros. Netbooks weigh about two pounds, so they don’t drag down your briefcase or airline carry-on. They’re also compact. They only take up about nine inches of space. For the busy traveler, they can really keep communication moving without all the weight. Some will argue that the smart phone can do the same, but it can’t. Ever try to write a professional report on your smart phone? The netbook has an operating system that accommodates office programs like spreadsheets and word processing. This little computer also has all the communication technology such as email, web browsing, Skype, recording, and music downloads. In many ways, it’s just more comfortable to use.

On the con side of the netbook computer, it is small. It requires getting used to because the keyboard is about 3/4 the size of a regular keyboard. Therefore, it will slow you down some. The screen is small, too. It can create some eye strain if you look at it long enough. If email, web browsing, recording and music are all you need for a trip, then the smart phone can do it. The smart phone may be more durable, too.

Netbook computers are really meant to be disposable. They’re inexpensive. Most cost about $250. However, with the cheap ticket price comes cheap construction. The hinges on the fold up screen get loose, so the electric connections are easily damaged. It might not be the death of the netbook, but it can be really annoying to look at a flickering screen. Getting one repaired probably isn’t worth it.

If you want this little computer to last, wrap it in a hand towel or something that is cushioned for travel. Like any laptop, it needs a little protection. Netbooks are ultimately a decent buy.
